Three people lost their lives near Neillsville during the early morning hours of Thursday after an intense rainfall left part of a highway submerged under water.
A Milwaukee couple was driving north on County Highway M when their car fell off of the highway where it was damaged by the rain. It is estimated that the vehicle fell between 12 and 15 feet before landing in a river. Some time after their accident, another vehicle crashed in the same spot, and landed on top of the truck.
The couple, as well as the second driver, was killed at the scene. Authorities say that they died on impact, and the weather is to blame for the demise of the highway. An investigation into the timing of the crashes is still underway, and officials are trying to determine whether the drivers were driving in rainy weather at the time of their crashes.
We would like to extend our condolences to the victims’ families and friends.
