Marathon County Sheriff's Department Captain addressed the media concerning the death of a toddler in Athens.
According to the written statement, the 2 year-old died some time after receiving an injury from scalding on Saturday, which may have contributed to the child's death. The child, the youngest of eight, was found dead in his home on Wednesday morning. The body was taken to the Madison Crime Lab for an autopsy to further the investigation, where police found no signs of physical trauma or abuse, a lack of organ deformities or abnormalities, no indications of dehydration, and no apparent infections. The autopsy did reveal a total adrenal gland depletion, which is usually a sign of extreme stress put on the body. The investigation is ongoing to find if his burns were indeed infected or not.
Police revealed that the boy did received medical attention for his scalding injuries, but the degree or type of care is uncertain. The police are leaving the case open, as the cause of death is yet to be determined. It has not yet been determined whether this incident involves a legal offense or wrongful death.
