A new, 16-year study shows that roughly one child an hour is injured when diving into a pool. Overall, 6,500 or so adolescents are injured per year by diving into a pool. These are the individuals treated in emergency rooms and trauma centers only. It does not take into account children who dive into pools and merely cut their knees or knock out teeth.
Of the injuries reported, approximately 80% of them occurred in children who were diving from a height of 1 meter or less. To sum up, these are not children diving from the high board or a platform. The majority of injuries are to children who are diving in from the side of the pool or a very low diving board.
Of the nearly 111,000 diving injuries to children under 19 between 1990 and 2006, 5% or so required hospitalization. The other injuries were treated and then the patient was released.
