In 2007, 739 people died in car accidents throughout Wisconsin. That number is slightly higher than the 712 people killed on all Wisconsin roads in 2006. These numbers were released by the State Department of Transportation.
While 739 is higher than 2006’s total, it is still below the 5-year average of 788 deaths per year. 111 of the total deaths involved motorcycles. That is 18 people more than 2006’s total.
The fewest traffic deaths in a year was in 1992 when only 645 people died. So far, 2008 is off to a much safer start than 2007. By last Wednesday, only 1 person had died in a traffic accident as compared to 7 for the same period in 2007.
