Gymnastics Injuries

Gymnastics has been a favorite afterschool activity for young kids for many decades now. Since gymnastics
have soared to the top of the most watched summer Olympics games, millions of children over the ages
have begged their parents to help them become like one of the stars on the American Olympic gymnastics
team.

But while gymnastics can be a thrilling, fun and self esteem building activity for young kids, it is
also inherently extremely dangerous. The popularity of gymnastics tends to make parents feel safe in
their choice to let their children pursue the activity, but the reality of the sport is that is more
akin to football than ballet as far as personal injury is concerned.

How Children are Injured in Gymnastics

Gymnastics requires children to do high jumps, flips and body contortions. Each event can result in
injuries ranging from something as innocuous as a sprained ankle to a crippling spinal injury.

Many injuries could have been avoided if the gym the injured children were taking gymnastics in had
taken certain precautions. Common gym errors include:

  • Loose connections, rusty parts or faulty joints on equipment
  • Old and inadequate mat coverage
  • Inexperienced teachers who do not properly oversee student form
