Perils of Permanent Makeup

Women are now undergoing procedures to have makeup permanently applied to their faces. Termed micropigmentation, the procedure is a form of tattooing. Eye liner, lip liner, and eye brow color can all be applied.

However, the Food and Drug Administration has received many complaints regarding adverse reactions to the procedure. The complaints are currently under investigation, but there are more than 50 complaints on record. Side effects reported include peeling, cracking, swelling, blistering, and scarring. Some individuals have also developed granulomas, chronically inflamed tissue masses, on the lips and eyes. This has resulted in disfigurement and difficulty talking and eating.

The brand being investigated is Premier Pigment. It is manufactured by the American Institute of Intradermal Cosmetics in Arlington, Texas. Premier Pigment did remove 5 of its ink shades in 2003 as a result of complaints. However, the FDA has received complaints of ink shades not included in the manufacturer’s removal efforts.

Because the FDA considers intradermal tattoos cosmetics, the color additives must approved. However, the FDA does not regulate tattoo inks or pigments. Tattoos are regulated by local authorities.
